101 Virtues to apply to your life; Number Four

Let’s explore the book of virtues that George Washington copied at 14 and followed throughout his life. These virtues are based on Aristotle's writings but have been enhanced over the centuries. We can translate them into modern language and find practical ways to apply them.

#4

In the Presence of Others Sing not to yourself with a humming Noise, nor Drum with your Fingers or Feet.

In modern language, this virtue means:

Be mindful of your surroundings and avoid making distracting noises when in the presence of others.

How to Apply This Today:

In Conversations & Meetings

Avoid humming, tapping, or making repetitive noises that distract or annoy others, especially in professional or social settings.

In Public Spaces

Be aware of the noise you create in a waiting room, library, or public transport. This includes loud phone notifications, music without headphones, and tapping on a table.

At Home or Work

If you share space with others, be considerate of your noise levels, especially when they are working, studying, or relaxing.

Essentially, it’s about respecting the shared space and ensuring your presence doesn’t distract or irritate others.
